A woman connected deeply with that painting and later shared with me that she had been a victim of abuse while serving in the military.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eHer story stayed with me.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eSo I painted something specifically for her.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003eBattle with Demons\u003c\/em\u003e wasn't about being haunted by the past. It was about \u003cstrong\u003efighting back\u003c\/strong\u003e.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe painting depicts a warrior cutting through the demons surrounding her, a visual representation of the battles she was facing in her own life.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eWhat happened afterward gave the painting a meaning I could never have created with paint alone.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eAfter receiving the painting, she began changing her life. She reconnected with her daughter. She confronted the demons she had been fighting. She overcame alcoholism and rebuilt her life.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eYears later, we are still friends.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI don't believe a painting deserves credit for the strength it took for her to do those things. \u003cstrong\u003eShe did that.\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eBut art can sometimes reach a place that ordinary conversation cannot.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eIt can give shape to something we haven't been able to explain. The fear of losing control. The fear of becoming violent. The awareness that something could always be there, waiting just over his shoulder.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eSo he painted it.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eNot as a clinical explanation of PTSD, and not as an attempt to describe anyone else's experience.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eHe painted \u003cstrong\u003ewhat his felt like\u003c\/strong\u003e.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe monster became a physical presence on the canvas: something that follows, watches, threatens, and remains close even during otherwise ordinary moments.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eIt was a way of taking something invisible and making it visible.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eA way of saying:\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eThis is what I live with.\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eThis is what it feels like.\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eDo you understand how it feels now?\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThat realization became an important part of Timothy Colomer's work. surrounded by the ghosts of his dead friends.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThey were not monsters.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThey were people he loved.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe ghosts represented the memories that remained with him, the time they had shared, and the complicated guilt of continuing forward when so many friends could not.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eLater, Timothy attended a program designed to help veterans develop skills for living with the effects of trauma.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eDuring an exercise called \u003cstrong\u003ethe Labyrinth\u003c\/strong\u003e, something changed.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eTimothy was able to confront the memories he had carried for years, say goodbye to his friends, and leave behind some of the weight he had been carrying.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe skeletons did not need to remain locked in the closet.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eHe could remember his friends without remaining chained to them.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eWhen Timothy returned home, he boxed up \u003cem\u003eSurvivor's Guilt\u003c\/em\u003e.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eHe did not sell it.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eHe donated the original painting to \u003cstrong\u003eBoulder Crest\u003c\/strong\u003e, the veterans organization connected to the experience that had helped him begin to let concealed in ordinary materials: rice bags, sacks, pillowcases, and whatever else could disguise something designed to kill.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eYears later, those ordinary objects did not always feel ordinary.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eTimothy could wake in the middle of the night, roll over, feel the pillow beneath his head, and for an instant believe that he was lying on an explosive.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe bedroom was safe.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe war was over.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eBut his body did not always know that yet.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003eWar Dreams\u003c\/em\u003e was painted out of necessity because Timothy wanted to show what he struggled to explain.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe painting depicts a man violently thrashing in bed, caught somewhere between sleep and memory, physically safe in the present while his mind has returned somewhere else entirely.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eIt was not intended as a universal depiction of PTSD.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eIt was \u003cstrong\u003ewhat this particular experience felt like to Timothy
