Friend
Friend
7 × 10 inch watercolor on archival paper
By Timothy Colomer
As Robert and Mike wandered through the streets of Japan, they unexpectedly came face to face with a local.
Neither of them spoke much Japanese.
Their new friend didn't speak much English.
The conversation began with a lot of smiles, confused looks, and enthusiastic pointing. Every few moments, the crane would gesture in a direction and repeat the same word over and over.
Robert and Mike looked at each other, shrugged, and started communicating the only way travelers often can... with hand signals.
A wave.
Another wave.
Then Robert mimicked standing on a surfboard.
Suddenly, their new friend burst into laughter.
"Ahhh... surfing!"
With a wide smile, he pointed toward the coast, where some of Japan's best waves rolled in from the Pacific Ocean.
Sometimes the greatest adventures don't begin with a map.
Sometimes they begin with meeting a stranger who becomes a friend.
If you found yourself in Japan, would you paddle out and catch a wave?
