Kanpai

7 × 10 inches original watercolor on archival paper

By Timothy Colomer

After a long day of exploring Japan, Robert and Mike stumbled into a lively street festival just as the evening celebrations were getting started.

The tables were overflowing with ramen, grilled skewers, fresh sushi, and enough local treats to keep two hungry travelers busy for hours. Music drifted through the streets while fireworks painted the night sky above Mount Fuji.

Someone nearby raised a small cup and smiled.

"Kanpai!"

Not knowing exactly what it meant, Robert and Mike happily raised their own cups and joined the celebration anyway.

Only later did they learn that kanpai simply means "cheers."

Sometimes you don't need to speak the same language to understand a moment.

Good food, good company, and genuine smiles have a way of translating themselves.

As fireworks burst overhead, the two friends toasted to another unforgettable day and wondered where tomorrow's adventure would lead.

If you could raise a glass anywhere in the world, where would it be?
