When Timothy Colomer began painting, he started with subjects he knew.

But as the work developed, painting became something else.

It became a way to give a voice to experiences that were difficult to explain with words.

My PTSD Monster grew out of one of those experiences.

For Timothy, PTSD carried a difficult duality: living with constant fear while also fearing the rage that could surface in uncomfortable situations. The fear of losing control. The fear of becoming violent. The awareness that something could always be there, waiting just over his shoulder.

So he painted it.

Not as a clinical explanation of PTSD, and not as an attempt to describe anyone else's experience.

He painted what his felt like.

The monster became a physical presence on the canvas: something that follows, watches, threatens, and remains close even during otherwise ordinary moments.

It was a way of taking something invisible and making it visible.

A way of saying:

This is what I live with.

This is what it feels like.

Do you understand how it feels now?

That realization became an important part of Timothy Colomer's work. Painting could communicate things he had struggled to explain in conversation.

Sometimes the canvas could speak where words could not.
