Battle with Demons
Battle with Demons
Original painting
By Timothy Colomer
This painting began with another work called War Dreams.
War Dreams depicted a man violently thrashing in bed, haunted by something the viewer could not see. A woman connected deeply with that painting and later shared with me that she had been a victim of abuse while serving in the military.
Her story stayed with me.
So I painted something specifically for her.
Battle with Demons wasn't about being haunted by the past. It was about fighting back.
The painting depicts a warrior cutting through the demons surrounding her, a visual representation of the battles she was facing in her own life.
What happened afterward gave the painting a meaning I could never have created with paint alone.
After receiving the painting, she began changing her life. She reconnected with her daughter. She confronted the demons she had been fighting. She overcame alcoholism and rebuilt her life.
Years later, we are still friends.
I don't believe a painting deserves credit for the strength it took for her to do those things. She did that.
But art can sometimes reach a place that ordinary conversation cannot.
It can give shape to something we haven't been able to explain. It can hang on a wall and quietly remind us of the person we are fighting to become.
That is what Battle with Demons came to represent.
And this is why I paint.
