Mike in Bomb Suit

7 × 10 inch watercolor on archival paper

By Timothy Colomer

Some heroes wear capes.

Others wear eighty pounds of Kevlar.

This painting is a tribute to one of the most demanding professions in the world: Explosive Ordnance Disposal.

Instead of placing Mike in his usual role as the cautious planner, I imagined him standing inside a Med-Eng EOD-8 bomb suit, ready to face the unknown with quiet determination. The oversized protective suit transforms this small goose into a reminder that courage is rarely about appearing fearless. More often, it's about taking the next step despite knowing exactly what the risks are.

For me, this piece is deeply personal.

I served as a United States Marine Corps Explosive Ordnance Disposal Technician. Every call required patience, discipline, trust in your training, and complete confidence in the teammates standing beside you.

The bomb suit represents far more than protective equipment.

It represents responsibility.

It represents sacrifice.

It represents the willingness to walk toward danger so everyone else can walk away from it.

Mike may look a little oversized inside the suit, but that's part of the story. None of us feels bigger than the challenge the first time we face it. We simply learn to carry the weight.

What challenge in your own life has required you to find courage one careful step at a time?
