Sleeping With Ghosts
Sleeping with Ghosts
Original oil painting
By Timothy Colomer
Sleeping with Ghosts began as an artistic challenge.
Still relatively new to working in oils, Timothy Colomer wanted to push his technical abilities and experiment with a composition influenced by the dramatic light, darkness, and atmosphere associated with Caravaggio.
The goal was to create a presence that felt almost contradictory.
A ghost, but not something frightening.
Something mysterious and otherworldly, yet captivating.
Almost angelic.
The painting became an exercise in capturing something that seems physically present while simultaneously feeling as though it might disappear.
But as the work developed, Sleeping with Ghosts became more than a technical study.
The ghost became a metaphor.
Perhaps it is someone you have lost but still feel beside you.
Perhaps it is someone you miss.
Perhaps it is a secret that shares the room with you even when no one else knows it exists.
Or perhaps it is simply the lingering essence of a person, place, or moment that has never completely left.
The painting deliberately leaves that question unanswered.
Because most of us, in one way or another, sleep with ghosts.
We carry people who are no longer there. We carry memories. We carry longing, secrets, love, regret, and pieces of lives that exist now only within us.
The ghost in the painting belongs to Timothy Colomer.
What it represents belongs to the viewer.
